Aerially assisted trophy hunting (AATH), also known as heli-hunting, involves flying recreational hunters and their guides into high country areas by helicopter in search of trophy animals.
This includes carrying recreational hunters (and their guide) by helicopter, actively searching for wild animals with trophy potential, on the ground guiding and killing of the wild animal and the recovery of the animal by helicopter.
AATH concessions do not provide approval for the live capture of wild animals. There is also a cull requirement, under DOC supervision.
National wild animal recovery operations (WARO) cover the supply of deer, pig, goat and chamois to Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) approved processors, and live capture of the same wild animals (excluding chamois) to be placed on authorised properties.
National WARO concessions exclude the carriage of either recreational hunters or fare paying passengers
AATH and WARO activities and updates to this dataset are managed out of DOC's Christchurch Office. AATH and WARO areas are generally set for a given period of time and then reviewed. There may be local instances where areas/blocks are required to be reviewed (e.g. due to safety concerns). This will result in edits to this dataset.
There is no editing of this dataset in the Permissions Mapping Tool.
