The Maryland food store list was compiled by combining two data from two sources, Data Axle the USDA SNAP Retailer Locator, to provide an additional degree of accuracy. Duplicates were deleted. In addition, food stores were categorized based on the following definitions:
Convenience Stores: A variety of stores that sell food products but place a significant focus on non-food items. Most sales may be made up from prepared foods, gas, cigarettes, pharmacy items, home goods, etc. This retail type includes chain and gas station convenience stores, drug stores or pharmacies, and discount/dollar stores.
Small Grocery & Corner Stores: Small format grocery stores that are typically independently owned and operated. They typically have annual food sales of less than $2 million, and have limited to no food departments. Corner stores are often located on street corners and thus small, limited to one row house unit, with an emphasis on snacks over groceries, similar to convenience stores. Small groceries are often larger, two or more row house units, and emphasize groceries over snacks.
Public Markets: Historic City-owned indoor markets that feature diverse vendors selling a variety of food (including prepared) and non-food products.
Supermarkets: Large format grocery stores with all food departments present, including produce, meats, seafood, canned goods and packaged goods. Usually chain stores, they typically have annual food sales of $2 million or more and have three or more cash registers.
Food stores that are certified to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP - previously know as food stamps) Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) payments in Maryland.
