Service Description: This map presents a suitability analysis for identifying high-potential mule deer hunting areas within California’s D5 hunting zone, with a focus on elevation, slope, distance from water, distance from roads and trails, and human access constraints. Using data from the USGS, USFS, CAL FIRE, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, this model highlights areas where physical habitat features align with known mule deer behavior patterns, such as preference for high-elevation ridgelines, cooler temperatures, forage availability, and seclusion from high human traffic. The final Areas of Interest (AOIs) reflect both GIS-derived suitability factors and field-based knowledge of local deer movement and hunter access challenges.
