Description: In the 1930 U.S. Decennial Census selected statistics were published for each of the Baltimore’s 28 wards. The ward system boundaries used in the 1930 census corresponded to the political ward boundaries from which citizens elected their representatives to Baltimore City government. Today’s equivalents of the ward system are Baltimore City council districts. Ward level data includes total population, with breakdowns by sex, race, nativity, and age. Variables: Header Definition AREA Baltimore City (BACITY) and each Baltimore City Ward as of 1930 (Ward#) POPTOT Total Population MALE Sex Male FEMALE Sex Female WHITE Color White BLACK Color Negro NATWH Native White, Total NATPAR Native White, Native Parentage MIXED Native White, Foreign of or Mixed Parentage FBWHITE Foreign Born White UNDER5 Age (Years), Under 5 AGE_5TO14 Age (Years), 5 to 14 AGE_15TO24 Age (Years), 15 to 24 AGE_25TO34 Age (Years), 25 to 34 AGE_35TO44 Age (Years), 35 to 44 AGE_45TO64 Age (Years), 45 to 64 AGE_65PLUS Age (Years), 65 and over AGE_21OVUK Age (Years), 21 and over (incl. unkn.) Definition is the terminology used in the printed 1930 census volumes. Also unique to the 1930 decennial census are the published statistics for 20 “Statistical Areas” in Baltimore City. Unfortunately none of the “Statistical Areas” boundaries corresponds with the 1930 ward boundaries. Statistics for each ‘Statistical Area” include number of families broken down by race, and number of children. Addition variables are published for number of multi-family dwellings, the value of occupant owned housing units, and fees charged for rental properties. The Statistical Areas map and corresponding data are listed as a separate Feature Service titled “Baltimore 1920 Census Statistical Areas”.
