SGI_Ecostates_Poor_Quality_Grassland_and_Shrubland (FeatureServer)

View In:   Map Viewer

Service Description: This layer contains only the "Poor condition rangeland" and "Poor condition grassland" categories downloaded from this webpage created by the Oregon Natural Resources Digital Library: https://oregonexplorer.info/content/threat-based-ecostate-map-0?topic=203 These two categories were combined for the final layer so that adjacent areas of both types would be combined into single features. Polygons smaller than 8100 square meters in area were then removed to simplify the layer for online use and reflect the practical difficulty of developing small islands of degraded land surrounded by undegraded land. Information on the original data layer: this dataset was created by the Institute for Natural Resources, Oregon State University, in June 2024 using Esri ArcGIS Pro 3.1.0. Vegetation cover maps used as the basis for this mapping were provided by the Rangeland Analysis Platform (https://rangelands.app/; Allred et al 2021). Citation: Allred, BW, et al. 2021. Improving Landsat predictions of rangeland fractional cover with multitask learning and uncertainty. Methods in Ecology and Evolution. https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.13564. The overall analysis was based on the principles of Threat-Based Land Management (Johnson et al 2019; see https://sageshare.org/) as a framework to identify and address the primary threats to sagebrush ecosystems of the northern Great Basin. Rangeland condition is described by ecological states (ecostates) that express current upland vegetation composition and level of threat from wildfire, invasive annual grasses, and juniper encroachment based on the cover of key rangeland functional groups and the severity of threats present. Ecostates are determined based on a rolling three-year average of percent cover of annual forbs & grasses (AFG), perennial forbs & grasses (PFG), shrubs, and trees from the Rangeland Analysis Platform vegetation cover products, version 3 (https://rangelands.app/; Allred et al 2021). The rule set used to define each ecostate is provided in the attribute table
