Whitebark_Pine_Range (FeatureServer)

Service Description: In support of status and trend monitoring, health analyses, and restoration and conservation efforts, the USDA Forest Service (USFS), Region 5 (R5), Remote Sensing Lab (RSL) and R5 Regional Ecology Program (REP) developed a species distribution map for whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis). Existing whitebark pine data from multiple sources were first compiled into an aggregated map in 2014. Since then, the map has been updated using field plot and survey data collected by the RSL, USFS Forest Health Protection, National Park Service, US Geological Survey, and California Native Plant Society. USFS Forest and project level monitoring and planning efforts generally rely upon corporate spatial data for regional dominance types as found in the Existing Vegetation dataset, and for at-risk species as found in the Natural Resource Manager (NRM). Whitebark pine presents a unique case due its extensive distribution. Typical mapping standards used in NRM to delineate at-risk plants with restricted ranges are challenging to follow. In addition, the Existing Vegetation map product represents whitebark only in cases where it is at least codominant in a stand, and where the stand exceeds 10% tree cover (whitebark pine may occur in scattered and sparse tree patches or as a shrub-like “krummholz” growth form). Development of a complete range distribution map for whitebark required a new approach. Methods are outlined in the Supplemental Information Section, including assembly of existing data, ground survey updates, and criteria for inclusion in the final dataset. The current map product includes polygons either with confirmed field presence, or with high degrees of certainty about presence based on environmental setting and imagery interpretation. Polygons without ground-based confirmations, and which appear unlikely habitat, have been excluded. These typically low elevation settings may contain ecologically important segments of the population, and are areas most likely to overlap with management and recreation...
