These are developed or modified by decisions at the district level. Area Units may be modified occasionally through updates in an environmental analysis. Once established, changes may occur in five years cycles depending on changes to outfitter/guide uses or the need to focus an analysis on a more specific area. Area Units are kept in the forest GIS database. Information about the guide use is collected annually in the Tongass Outfitter and Guide Database. Allocations for commercial use of the National Forest is allocated within each Area Unit. Information is gathered annually by these geographic areas to make sure the allocations for commercial use does not exceed what was approved in the environmental docuument. Area Units are developed and modified by the Districts for their use in monitoring commercial uses approved for their district. These Area Units are also useful for reports for other resources wanting to understand the types and levels of commercial use that occurs on the forest for a specific area.
