The Riparian Area Opportunity Index can help to identify watersheds across the country where there is the greatest opportunity for establishing trees, shrubs and other perennial vegetation along water bodies adjacent to cropland to enhance surface drinking water quality.
This Index was created by combining the National Forests to Faucets 2.0 (F2F2) Assessment watershed importance data (IMP) with data on the percent of the riparian area in cropland (% Cropland). This analysis identifies watersheds that are important to surface drinking water and that have a high opportunity for improving water quality using perennial vegetation in between cropland and water bodies.
Pasture land was not included in this analysis due to insufficient high resolution data. Future analysis may address pasture.
