Description: Enacted in 1968, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act establishes a framework to permanently protect selected free-flowing rivers in their natural condition for the public’s present and future use and enjoyment. For a river segment to be included in this inventory it must be deemed both eligible and suitable. Under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (Act), the river must meet physical requirements (eligibility). These physical requirements are: 1) the river must be free-flowing; and 2) the river must have at least one resource important or unique to the region or nation. Suitability refers to the socio -economic conditions associated with the river. With passage of the Act, Congress declared it to be: ". . . the policy of the United States that certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations." The Act requires that each federally administered river in the National System have a legally established boundary. In a few instances, Congress has specified the boundaries for a river in the designating legislation. Generally, however, this responsibility is left to the managing agency to be completed following designation. Section 3(b) of the Act provides specific direction to river-administering agencies. These feature classes represent the polygon boundary data for all Wild and Scenic Rivers administered by the National Park Service which have been found to possess a federally designated boundary. Those Wild and Scenic Rivers which have been found to have no Wild and Scenic River boundary but may have a protection area associated with it are represented in the table named: "Rivers_With_Protection_Areas_or_Without_WSR_Boundaries." Those Wild and Scenic Rivers with Wild and Scenic River boundaries which cannot be mapped at the current time are represented in the table named: "To_be_Mapped_Rivers_With_WSR_Boundaries" and a reason for the current lack of spatial data is provided.
