Description: Wilderness camping restrictions were updated as part of the SEKI Wilderness Stewardship Plan (WSP) in 2015. Camping is not permitted on trails until "first camp" is reached (Table 19, page 116 - 117 in the WSP), and area specific camping restrictions are applied throughout the park. Lakes Trail: no camping at Aster Lake or Heather Lake; and camp only in designated sites at Pear and Emerald Lakes. High Sierra Trail: Camp only in designated sites at Bearpaw Meadow. Eagle/Mosquito Trails: no camping between the trail and Eagle Lake; and no camping within 1/4 mile of first mosquito lake. Atwell/Hockett Trail: no camping between the trail and Whitman Creek. Mount Whitney/Crabtree area: no camping at Timberline Lake.Off-trail camping in wilderness is limited to 14 nights in any one location, with exceptions. Camping is limited to 3 consecutive nights for Emerald and Pear lakes (combined), and Lower and Upper Soldier lakes (combined). Camping is limited to 2 consecutive nights for Charlotte Lake, Kearsarge Lakes Basin (basin-wide), Paradise Valley (valley-wide), Redwood Canyon (area-wide); Colony Mill Trail, Crabtree / Whitney Creek area, Don Cecil Trail, Dusy Basin (basin-wide), Guitar Lake, North Dome, and along the JMT from Woods Creek Crossing to Vidette Meadow (any one location). Camping is limited to 1 night for Rae Lakes basin (per lake), and Hamilton Lake.Boundaries were modified in 2013 based on two sources: (1) a previously existing polygon shapefile that showed camping restrictions in specific areas; and (2) park policy, which mandated that camps must be located at least one mile from any road or development, or should be located beyond a designated distance from individual trailheads, as specified in the 1986 Backcountry Management Plan. The dataset was developed by: applying a one-mile buffer to existing roadways; applying a half-mile buffer to trail segments based on management specifications; and merging the resulting buffered areas with existing camping restrictions data.Boundaries were modified in 2013 based on two sources: (1) a previously existing polygon shapefile that showed camping restrictions in specific areas; and (2) park policy, which mandated that camps must be located at least one mile from any road or development, or should be located beyond a designated distance from individual trailheads, as specified in the 1986 Backcountry Management Plan. Special areas were estimated by the Wilderness Coordinator and the Chief Ranger and heads-up digitized by GIS staff. Specifically: (1) boundaries along the Rae Lakes loop were refined to align with WTZ's and a quarter-mile buffer was applied to Bullfrog Lakes (the calculated buffer produced logical inconsistencies which were corrected using reasonable judgement to facilitate "on-the-ground" management); (2) North Dome was heads-up digitized based on topography to reflect the plan’s intent to permit overnight rock climbing, and Don Cecil Trail was heads-up digitized based the relative locations of trail segments and stream crossings; and (3) boundaries along the Lakes Trail were modified to extend "no camping" coverage across all of Travel Zone 70 and a 250 meter buffer was applied to Pear and Emerald Lakes to represent camping in designated sites only. A new field was added that contains details on each restriction type and map topology was applied to reduce geometry errors and other boundary inconsistences.Frontcounty camping is limited to designated campgrounds only.Camping regulations are subject to change.
