Service Description: The purpose of this project is to provide an updated representation of the total shoreline miles and water acres within each of the 88 ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes park unit boundaries. This project uses the best available data on a park-by-park basis to delineate the shoreline. Shoreline includes: lagoons, marshland, lakes, rivers, and ponds that were determined to be tidally influenced; hardened shorelines such as memorials, seawalls, and marinas; and other features such as islands, rock outcrops and sand bars (if they were captured by the data and/or added in due to park feedback). All tidally influenced water bodies, as determined through park feedback, independent research, and/or the categorization found in the original NOAA Continuously Updating Shoreline Product (CUSP) dataset, were counted as water acres. Examples include lagoons, marshland, lakes, rivers, and ponds. These statistics are meant to serve as a general representation of the park unit shorelines and are in no way legally binding or intended to be used for navigational purposes.

Description:

The boundaries used in this update originate from the National Park Service. The Land Resources Division (LRD) of the National Park Service provided the boundaries for 85 of the 88 official ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes National Park units. The LRD boundary data used in this project was last updated December 31, 2022 and was subsequently downloaded on January 5, 2023. Acadia National Park (ACAD), Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) all provided their own park unit boundary dataset. The Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (LEWI) boundary was a product of LRD, but was slightly adjusted to more accurately represent the park unit due to park feedback. In some cases, the shoreline delineation was determined to extend beyond the park unit boundary after receiving feedback from the park unit.
