Description: The purpose of this long-term monitoring project is to assess the effects and impacts of elk herbivory on vegetation communities in Cataloochee Valley and near Balsam Mountain. In 2012, Fourteen large mammal exclosures were installed to prevent access by elk. Control plots were co-located with each exclosure. Beginning in 2012, herbaceous and woody vegetation within each of the plots will be sampled every 5 years.
