Service Description: This web map was created to help visualize shoreline change data for Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS). The Spring shorelines from 2007 to 2012 and their change rates are presented in this web map.
Shoreline positions and change rates for FIIS were analyzed by a team from Rutgers University under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service (NPS). The Rutgers team used the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.3 and Shoreline Change Mapper software to conduct their analysis. A baseline was established parallel to the overall trend of the FIIS shorelines and transects were cast perpendicular to the baseline at intervals of 10 meters. The transects and their points of intersection with the shorelines were used to calculate shoreline change rates. For this web mapping data visualization project, the transects were updated to DSAS v5.0.
