FIIS_Shoreline_Change_2012_to_2017 (FeatureServer)

View In:   Map Viewer

Service Description: Transects were cast from offshore baseline by NCBN using the Digital Shoreline Analysis system (DSAS v5.0), edited to match original FIIS transects that were cast from an onshore baseline by Rutgers team using DSAS v4.3. These newly cast transects were then trimmed in DSAS v5.0 to the shoreline change envelope. Shoreline positions and change rates for Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS) were analyzed by a team from Rutgers University under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service (NPS). The Rutgers team used the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.3 and Shoreline Change Mapper software to conduct their analysis. A baseline was established parallel to the overall trend of the FIIS shorelines and transects were cast perpendicular to the baseline at intervals of 10 meters. The transects and their points of intersection with the shorelines were used to calculate shoreline change rates. Transects are labeled with the linear regression rate (which indicates the annual shoreline change rate at that transect) and the 95% confidence interval. Note that the length of each transect in this map is determined by the shoreline change envelope (the greatest distance between all shorelines at that transect), not the net shoreline movement (the distance between the oldest and most recent shorelines). Please refer to DSAS for further information on rate calculations and field descriptions, and to the 2012-2017 FIIS Shoreline Position Trend Report for details on data analysis and results.
