Description: Post-Storm shoreline for Fire Island National Seashore derived utilizing a MHW Shoreline Derivation tool and the "2014 NGS Coastal Mapping Program Topobathy Lidar: Post-Sandy Atlantic Seaboard" LiDAR dataset. This particular LiDAR dataset was chosen as it represents the most recent (as of September 2015) LiDAR available for this area. Shoreline derived for the ocean-side of the island only. The process was migrated from a computer vision workflow to delineate a vertical datum-based shoreline (MHW) to the Esri ArcGIS Desktop environments, utilizing arcpy (Liu, Sherman & Gu, 2007). The tool can optionally utilize VDatum or a MHW indictor file derived from USGS open file report to convert the elevations into a MHW Datum (Weber, List & Morgan, 2005). The LAS files are imported as a LAS dataset, and then interpolated at a 1x1m spatial resolution utilizing the natural neighbors algorithm. The resulting Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is smoothed by applying a Gaussian filter to remove noise while maintaining edges. A map algebra function separates the DEM into pixels above and below MHW. The new binary raster has the morphological function opening applied which first erodes then dilates the raster to remove edge noise while keeping the original extent. The raster is converted to a polygon and then a line dataset which is smoothed. The final step removes hydrological features below a user input minimum length of interest.
