Description: This layer represents contiguous meadow features within Yosemite National Park. Meadow polygons were derived from the Yosemite National Park Vegetation Map layer (Yosemite National Park--Division of Resources Management and Science--Physical Science and GIS branch, 2005) by aggregating individual vegetation types considered to be indicative of meadows. Four vegetation types were included: 1) semi-permanently to permanently flooded meadow, 2) intermittently to seasonally flooded meadow, 3) shorthair sedge herbaceous allicance, and 4) willow species/meadow shrubland mapping unit. Boundaries between adjacent meadow vegetation polygons were dissolved to form contiguous meadow polygons, which were then assigned a unique id ('meadowID' in the attribute table). additionally, contiguous meadow polygons that were seperated only by a stream/river where assigned the same meadowID. Version 1 of the layer. This shapefile is based on the Contiguous Meadows layer, described above, however it has been updated to incorporate corrections to Yosemite meadow boundaries. Yosemite uses the Contiguous Meadows layer for multiple meadow monitoring and vegetation surveys. Over many years, field crews have corrected meadow polygons in the original Contiguous Meadows layer based on ground-truthing and aerial imagery. All frontcountry meadow boundaries within Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne and Dana meadows were mapped with a ProXRT GPS unit as part of our Meadow Fragmentation project. Backcountry meadow boundaries were edited, based on aerial imagery and/or ground-truthing, where they diverged significantly from the Contiguous Meadows layer as a part of our Bare Soil and Stock Use Assessment projects. Meadow polygons have been further edited to excise significant non-meadow area within the meadow boundary such as rock, sand, trees, river, ponds, roads, etc. All original polygons and recent edits were based on biological, rather than political standards.
