Description: Enacted in 1968, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act preserves certain rivers in a natural, free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. To be designated, it must be shown that a river is both eligible and suitable. To be eligible, a river must be free-flowing, have good water quality, and have at least one value that is important or unique to the region or nation. To be suitable, a river must have proper designation support. This geodatabase contains eligible, eligible/suitable, eligible/not suitable, and ineligible river segments found in wild and scenic river studies performed by the National Park Service. These studies were performed on rivers on both public and private land, including NPS land. The spatial data was derived from river segments from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system at a 1:24,000 scale. The feature dataset, Eligible_Suitable_Rivers, contains spatial representations of segment and river levels. The segment feature class contains the Classification and Outstandingly Remarkable Value attribute information about each river segment. The river feature class includes information about the source documentation pertaining to the spatially connected river segments. The ineligible table includes links to the pertinent source documentation.
