Classifications identify where water quality conditions are suitable for the harvest shellfish for human consumption. The National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) has set rules and standards used by FDACS to properly classify areas based on an indicator group of bacteria called fecal coliform. The presence of fecal coliform bacteria in coastal waters indicates feces from warm-blooded animals is present and that human pathogens are also likely to be present. For shellfish harvesting areas to be classified as approved or conditionally approved areas must meet the NSSP 14/31 standard and for restricted and conditionally restricted must meet the 88/163 standard.

This data is provided for information purposes only.
