            <abstract>Buffer Areas around all ponds at least 10 acres in size in Maine. This ponds buffer data is a part of a group of datasets developed to show areas around water bodies and wetlands that correspond approximately to state shoreland zoning standards. These buffers were developed from USGS 1:24000 data provided by the Maine Office of GIS. All buffer areas extend 250 feet from USGS 1:24000 boundaries of ponds at least 10 acres in size.</abstract>
            			
            <purpose>This pond buffer data is part of a group of datasets developed as part of the Beginning with Habitat Outreach project, a cooperative effort of The Maine Natural Areas Program, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and other government and non-profit agencies in Maine. This pond buffer data, along with datasets of buffers around streams, wetlands that are at least 10 acres in size, rivers, and coastal waters are designed to illustrate the importance of riparian habitat in landscape-level planning for biodiversity at the town and multi-town level. Maps produced from this data are presented to municipalities and land trusts in an effort to encourage open-space planning efforts that include a vision for the preservation of biodiversity.  These data are for planning purposes only and should not be used as a statutory representation of the resource.</purpose>

                <procdesc>All ponds in Maine were extracted from the Maine Office of GIS 1:24,000 Library of Data. Original data is organized by USGS quadrangle map so, tile boundaries between maps were dissolved and acreages were calculated. Ponds at least 10 acres in size were buffered 250 feet using the ArcInfo 8.1 buffer command. The pond water areas were then removed from the buffers using a combination of the ArcInfo Identity command and selection features in ArcView 3.2a. A shapefile was created from the resulting ArcInfo coverage that represented the buffer areas only (Inside = 100).</procdesc>
