This polygon dataset shows the locations of provisionally registered and registered trees in the Australian Capital Territory. These trees are protected under the Urban Forest Act 2023.
City Services, Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCCS) administer the Urban Forest Act 2023.
Both provisionally registered and registered trees are protected. Approval must be received before pruning or any other activity that could cause damage to a protected tree.
The ACT Tree Register has been established to protect trees of individual importance across the built-up urban area. The ACT Tree Register can be found on the TCCS website. A registered tree has been identified as being exceptional for it’s:
- Natural or cultural heritage values;
- Landscape and aesthetic value; and/or
- Scientific and ecological value.
The Conservator of Flora and Fauna will make the decision regarding the registration of trees. The trees are assessed and if they meet the criteria, they will be placed on the Provisional Tree Register before a decision is made on full registration, within 12 months.
Attributes include status, botanical name, land use, custodianship, division, district, tree height, canopy diameter, trunk circumference, registration date and criteria. These assets are captured and maintained in the asset database through the nomination of trees to the ACT Tree Register.
