Description: Navigable Water Protection Division (NWPD), Transport Canada (TC), reviews applications for work on navigable waterways as required by the Navigable Waters Protection Act (NWPA). Works are all structures in, under, over or alongside waterways that may impact or present a hazard to navigation on that waterway. Works also include all activities that alter the waterway in any way so that safe navigation would be impacted. Works include but are not limited to bridges,dams, causeways, piers, wharfs, docks, cables, pipelines, riprap, artifical islands, booms, dredging, temporary inwater structures, etc. If a work is found to present a signficant navigational hazard, the work requires a legal approval before work can begin. If the submitted plans are reviewed and found to not present a signficant navigational hazard or the waterway is deemed to be non-navigable, an exemption is provided indicating the work has been reviewed and no risk to navigation was found. If the work is constructed without approval, a review of the exisitng work is conducted and recommendations/suggestions and approval/exemption is provided dependant on the results of the review. A record of works is collected in the NWDS database. Each work is assigned a geographical coordinate marking the centre of the work and/or site. This dataset presents a point for each work with assigned coordinates. The attribute information includes the name of the waterway, the status of the workand type of work.
