<idAbs>
Motivations

This data was collected by Cal Poly at the Swanton Pacific Ranch as a part of a Continuous Rainfall Monitoring Project that began in 1997. The Al Smith House is one of many rain gauges at the ranch, which are used by Cal poly to record trends in rainfall over time, study its effects on vegetation, and draw attention to dryer areas that may require attention during the wildfire season.

Composition

The set contains time stamps and cumulative records of rainfall, which are reset at the start of every water year. The QC Flag column marks where there may be large gaps without data or unusual data. Water years are recorded as starting in October and ending in September.

Collection Process

Data was collected using a tipping gage. Time stamps were recorded every time 0.01 inches of rain were added to the gauge.

Recommended Uses

Rainfall data will be used for the monitoring of wildfire risks and trends between different locations on the ranch across time. The data is useful for comparisons of weather patterns across time in California, for creating predictive models of rainfall, or comparisons of rainfall in different locations in California.

Units

Inches

</idAbs>
